Super Savings Saturday

I feel like I did a lot of shopping this week! I got some good deals though...and next week I'm on the lookout for even better deals (rumor has it that Walgreens has a lot of clearance finds! Watch out WAGS...here I come!!). And yes, you will notice that I went back to Fareway twice for more peanut butter. The good news is that now I don't have to buy peanut butter for at least a year (or at least until the next time I can get it for 39c-69c per jar!). Hubs' response when he saw all the peanut butter stacked up in my stockpile cupboard? "Holy peanut butter hon!"

Worth Reading

I ended up coming home from work sick around lunchtime today, so in between naps I've been getting in some good blog reading while I rest on the couch. I've come across a few great posts today, and I really want to share them with you all, as I'm sure they can be of help to you as well!

...Do you feel that you are being led to stay at home with your children? To read of others' struggles and joys of deciding to be a SAHM, head on over to The Finer Things in Life where Amy is hosting a series called "Mommy Come Home". This whole series will warm your heart and hopefully help you make a decision you may be struggling with.

...Brandy from Prudent Homemaker has written an excellent guest post on how to fill in the gaps of your stockpile. This is a must read, as all of these gaps are items I'm sure we all consume!

...There is a great post over at Sharpen Your Scissors about a new program starting up at CVS! It's one that I'm really excited about, and you should be too!

...Jamie, over at I am a Money Magnet! has put together a great post on creating a 72 hour emergency preparedness kit! It has inspired me to get something together too, just in case!

Happy Reading!

Cut Your Grocery Bill - Menu Planning

Last time we talked about cutting your grocery budget, we discussed the importance of stockpiling. Stockpiling is very important, but sometimes people don't quite understand yet. They see a grocery picture from Super Savings Saturday and think "she only bought peanut butter this week. Surely that's not all she's feeding her family?!?". You are correct...that most certainly is not all that I am feeding my family. You can actually see from my cooking blog, Love from the Kitchen, that my family eats quite well.

You'll also notice on my cooking blog that I regularly participate in Menu Plan Monday. Why, you ask? Because menu planning is a pertinent (how's that for a 50c word?!?) to keeping my budget low. Menu planning is the reason that I am able to spend the bulk of my weekly grocery budget stocking up on things, like a years worth of peanut butter, so I don't have to pay full price later.

Basically, when I menu plan, I plan out of my stockpile. Very rarely does my grocery list include things that I need for the week's meals because I am going off of what I already have. That way I don't have to burn up any of my grocery budget on items that aren't on sale or at stockpile worthy prices (besides milk, bread and produce of course).

I always start out the Thursday before the new week. I sit down with my favorite cookbooks, Taste of Home magazines and recipe card box. I also open up my recipe box over at Allrecipes. I then go through and decide what I can make with what I have. I try to keep quite a variety of meals and meats. For example, I strive to only eat chicken, ground beef, steak, etc. only once per week. I also try to plan one meatless meal per week. And we always have leftover night twice a week to eliminate that food waste (but that's a whole post in itself). I also try to plan based on things that need to be used up. For example my quest to remove all single boxes of this or that from my pantry and freezer right now. Menu planning helps me to get rid of things that would otherwise most likely sit around wasting away.

Menu planning is important in keeping a grocery budget low, because since you know what you will be eating for the week, you can make a detailed list of what you will be needing to purchase instead of going to the store and buying anything and everything that sounds tasty (and therefore blowing your budget). So I encourage you to start menu planning. It will save your sanity...and your budget!

Super Savings Saturday

You're going to think I'm crazy. Really, really crazy. Because I've boughten more peanut butter this week than I have in my entire life. But honestly, this is the best deal I've ever seen on peanut butter, and it's probably the best we'll see for a long, long time. So I'm stocking up in hopes of getting enough to last me a year. Hey, that's what stockpiling is all about anyways, right?

Fareway...

Total OOP before coupons - $56.26
Total OOP after coupons - $23.50
Total Savings - $32.76 (58%)
WalMart....
I usually avoid WalMart like the plague...but I'm stocking up on paper plates for my sisters high school graduation in May, and WalMart is where the cheap paper plates are at :)
Total OOP before coupons & MIR - $23.21
Total OOP after coupons & MIR - $10.29
Total Savings - $12.92 (56%)

Walgreens...
I was so incredibly unhappy with this WAGS run. I wanted to do this transaction twice over, but the cashier started giving me hassle on the second transaction, so I just asked her to void the whole thing. So she did, and when she noticed that I was still standing there, she snaps at me "I thought you wanted me to void the whole thing?" To which I responded, "I did. But I would also like my coupons back since I didn't end up buying anything." She mumbled and grumbled but gave them back, all the while calling over a manager. I told her I had done nothing wrong, took my coupons and walked out while she talked lowly with the manager. Oh Lord.
Total OOP before coupons and RR - $10.57
Total OOP after coupons and RR - $0.18
Total Savings - $10.39 (98%)
Aldi...

And lastly, I decided to hit up Aldi for their great prices on produce. I was not disappointed. I got all of this in the picture for $20.83. I forgot how much I love that store!

August Goal Wrap Up and Septemeber Beginnings

My, my. Where did August go? It FLEW!! I'm SUPER glad that September is here, as fall is SO my favorite time of year! Here's an update on how last month's goals went...
Financial Goals...
...Get credit card debt completely paid off!
It is getting so incredibly frustrating waiting for this check to show up so we can finally finish paying off credit card debt! We've called our tax preparer on several occaisons, and they are no help whatsoever. So we continue to play the waiting game. If it takes much longer to show up, I'm going to have to do another budget revamp so we can start making large payments out of our paychecks each pay period instead of sending that money to savings or our house loan.
...Make triple payments on house once CC debt is paid off
This is finally going to start happening in November! I started working again in the end of July, part time. I quickly got bumped to full time and a small raise. We were also ecstatic to discover that we don't need my paychecks to pay bills! We got so used to living on just hubs' income that we've adjusted to it quite well! Since I get paid 2x per month, the plan is to have the first of my two paychecks go into savings and the second onto the house loan. My paycheck is equal to the amount of two payments on the house loan, and we will also continue making one payment per month out of hubs' paycheck like usual. So triple payments will begin! It has to wait so long however, because this month we are using my paychecks to pay 100% down for new carpet in our main floor hallway and bedrooms, and the first paycheck of October has to pay for our vehicle registrations while the second will pay for new tires on our SUV! Then in November we will start snowballing at loans and savings with my checks! yay!
....Find new ways to make money from home.
This has again gone on the back burner. Now that I'm working and my paychecks are purely "extra" money, I've not been as concerned about this goal. I still do the same things as in the past, YouData, Swagbucks, MyPoints, etc. I just haven't been into researching new techniques.
....Get emergency savings account built up to one years expenses
All extra income is continuing to go into savings. As well as one paycheck per month starting in November. I've been trying to send out a large amount of rebates each month as all rebate checks go to savings as well. They have really been helping to bump our savings up!
Couponing Goals...
...Accumulate as many gift cards as possible
This month I only earned $10 in Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks. I've decided that I'm saving these gift cards up for a pressure canner so next year when I garden I will be able to can most of the goodies for winter and not have to worry about my precious freezer space! I also got a gift card to Menards for my birthday, which will be going towards some tools and such (I've turned into quite a decorating diva lately! So some power tools are much needed for the projects that I'll soon be taking on! Watch for a new series to start...Decorating Tuesdays!).
....Get back in the rebate game
I sent out 3 rebates in August totaling $22.74. I recieved $47.94 in checks for rebates sent out previously.
August Goals Update...
...Get things really figured out. Rework goals according to the new financial situation..
I finally feel in control of our finances again! Things are really working out well and we aren't struggling, while only having to use one of our incomes and being able to use the other for things needed/savings/debt payment. It's incredibly exciting!
..Start setting money aside so I don't have to take out any more student loans
Plans have changed, and I've decided that when I graduate with my generals degree this December I will be done with school. I've decided that working in a daycare is my true calling in life (after being a sahm...someday, hopefully). I was going to get my bachelors in early childhood, but once the 3 year old teacher told me that she only has a 2 year degree in sales and marketing (which is exactly what I currently have!) I decided to just call it quits for a while. So now I just need to worry about student loan repayment and not future expenses!
September Goals...
...Start planning shopping trips better. Know my prices better and do a better job of trading for coupons more to go with the sales. I'd like to see my after coupon/rebates/RR/ECB/gift cards totals below 10% on the dollar most of the time (so a 90%+ savings rate most of the time)
...Begin evaluating winter needs (i.e. weatherization this house will need, planning for higher electric bills due to heat being on, etc.)
...Add 10% to savings (which means 10% of what we currently have is the amount that I would like to add)
...Prepare for hubs' work trip to Florida in October (he will be gone for 5 days, with most all expenses paid except for personal items like souveniers, etc. so all we'll really have to plan for is anything extra he wants to pack to take along, getting a nationwide cell phone plan, etc.)
