Just a Note...

I had big plans for posting today...a great Frugal Friday, Finding Freedom Friday and Food Waste (for my cooking blog) posts all written out in my head.

But, my husband's grandma was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning. We went and visited her last night (hence the absence of posts yesterday as well) and thought there was a good chance that she would be released today. No luck though. She lost a lot of blood overnight, so they are keeping her longer. So I am off to spend the day with family in the hospital and hubs has to work until 9:00 tonight...so I'm not seeing any good posts on today's horizon.

I'm (really, really) hoping that I can get my Super Savings Saturday post out tomorrow, as I had a SUPER week shopping wise! I hope that this week is an omen as to how shopping will be going now that we're moved home!

Anyways, I'm off....hopefully to be back tomorrow. Maybe late (late, late, late) tonight. My sister has to work til midnight and is coming to spend the night with us when she gets off as she has to be back to work early in the morning and can eliminate a 1/2 hour drive by just crashing here. So I'm planning on staying up til she gets here, so maybe I'll get some of my wonderfully written in my head posts out then!

Have a blessed day!

The HyVee Deal Gets Better!

So I ended up doing my big shopping last night (bigger post on that to come!) as hubs' grandma was admitted to the hospital yesterday, so when we went to see her I made the most of our gas and got the shopping out of the way too. Well, I stopped into HyVee on our way home to get in on the Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta deal that I mentioned yesterday.

And it's better than I thought. Waaaay better than I thought.

The pasta is sale priced at 99c per box. With the $1/1 coupons out there that makes them free. BUT, for every two boxes that you buy, the register automatically took off 75c! That makes this pasta in the 60c mark per box. So with the $1/1 coupons thats 40c overage PER BOX!

The cashier had to have an asst. manager come over and ring in the coupons, and I thought they were going to give me a hard time about it, but they just put them in manually and said nothing.

SO. RUUUNNN to your HyVee and pick up this pasta....because you just can't beat getting paid to buy pasta!

Keep your eyes peeled for the shopping trip post later this afternoon!

HyVee Deal Alert!

I don't usually post deal alerts as I feel that there are many other quality blogs out there that devote much time to putting extensive lists together, but if it's a deal too good to beat then I will share!

This week HyVee's online ad is promoting Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta on sale for 99c. There are $1/1 coupons out there, which would make this pasta free! The next cheapest I have found this anywhere is at WalMart for $1.50 (50c after coupon). So RUN to HyVee and use up those coupons to get yourself some FREE pasta!

Also a reminder that Fareway has the Marcal 4 packs of toilet paper for $1.19. After the $1/1 coupons that are out there, you can get four rolls of toilet paper for only 19c...that just under 5c per roll!

Making My Own Pantry Staples

I have started to take upon myself to make our own pantry staples. The first of the pantry staples that I made for us was the homemade strawberry rhubarb jam, which was featured on my other blog. Go check it out if you haven't already (and if you haven't...shame on you!).

Making our own pantry staples is not only better on the wallet...but it's most often times better for you! I saved a ton just by making my own jam! Let's break it down...

Strawberries - $1.99
Rhubarb - FREE (it's grown on my dad's farm)
Sugar - 20c
Fruit Pectin - $1.27

That adds up to $3.46, which is the same amount that the local grocery store charges for one jear of jam. I got a little discouraged when I saw this number, but then I remembered that I got THREE jars' worth of jam out of this, which works out to be $1.15 per jar. That's by far cheaper than buying at the store.

Not only am I saving nearly $2 per jar of jam (more when I am able to get the strawberries for cheaper during their peak season), but I know what went into this jam. I know all that it contains!

I'm eager to try out making other pantry stapes for our home to save some money and know what's going into our tummies! It sure works for me! To see other entries to WFMW, check out We are THAT Family!

What's Been in my Mailbox

A lot of the freebies from my week of Freebie 5's has been showing up in my mailbox...a great way to give my stockpile a tiny little boost without spending the gas to go anywhere! I got coupons for better than ears, playtex tampons, Aveeno Nourish, Prilosec OTC, Olay Definity, Arm & Hammer Essentials Cleaners and one good for a FREE bottle of Gillette Shampoo. I also got samples of Playtex Sport tampons, John Freida Nourish Shampoo, Aveeno Nourish Shampoo, Better than Ears dog treat, Prilosec OTC, and Caress Body Wash. I also got the Home Made Simple Coupon book. I also got my Office Max Perks membership information. What a great mail week!

I'm hoping some more great freebies come around this week as it is my no spend week (with the exception of gasoline) and it comes at no better time as I am in between jobs right now so I don't have a paycheck coming in this week like I normally would (I start next week, yay!) and so we'll only have hubs' check this week to get us by...and we still have a lot of double bills to pay this month (the last of the bills from our apartment...and the first of the bills at our house...) so we are living off our pantry and free fun this week! I'll let you know how it goes!

Fareway Deal Alert!

I just wanted to give a heads up to any Fareway shoppers out there that the 4 packs of Marcal toilet paper is only $1.19. Paired up with the $1/1 coupon in many recent papers, that makes this only 19c for four rolls. This is by far the best deal on toilet paper that I have seen in my area to date!

A Forgotten Shopping Trip

I went to HyVee last week, and with the move and all, I completely forgot to share my goodies! I was pretty excited about this small trip as Mitch informed me a few weeks ago that Frosted Mini Wheats is his new favorite cereal, which surprised me as his favorite cereal has always been Fruity Pebbles. Actually, the conversation went something like this...

"Do you want more Fruity Pebbles?"
"No. I decided that I want to start eating more grown up cereal. Stuff that's not so sugary and kiddy"
"Okay....like?"
"Frosted Mini Wheats."

Riiiigghhht.....because frosted mini wheats are so well known for being not sugared...

Anyways, here's the load....

Total OOP before coupons: $10.96
Total OOP after coupons: $4.08
Total Saved: $6.88 (63%)

I also went to Fareway and picked up four 4 packs of Marcal toilet paper for a total of 96c OOP. Before coupons it was $4.96. Thats a savings of $4 (81%).

You can see my Walgreens trip for the week here, and to see more great savings, check out Super Savings Saturday over at MoneySavingMom.

Tips to Thrift...

Last week, I showed off pictures of my Goodwill haul. I love Goodwill! Today I was thinking about how when I was younger it was my dream to have a designer shopping spree. I just loved the idea of all the cutesy designer clothes hanging in my closet, fresh off Rodeo Drive. While I was thinking about this past ambition, I just didn't get excited about it like I used to. But what did get me excited was a shopping trip planned shortly thereafter for next week to Goodwill with my sister.

I just get so excited about finding something positively great for so little. It's the thrill of the hunt! Then I got thinking about my closet, and I realized that I get more excited to wear my finds from thrift stores, Goodwill and garage sales than I do the clothes I purchased new at retail (sale, or not). So I thought I would share some of my tips for finding great stuff for cheap!

...Check to see if the store is having a discount of any type. For example, last weekend my Goodwill was having 1/2 off on the pink tagged items. So I started off my trip by looking only at the items with pink tags. After the 1/2 off, those items only ended up being $1.69. Everything else was priced at $3.38, so after I evaluat the pink tagged items, if I still want more variety to choose from, I go back and look through everything else.

Another consignment shop that I check out occaisonally has a 25c bin. Which is really the only reason I go there as it is incredibly overpriced. I don't always find anything in this bin, it's alot of off season stuff that just didn't sell. But it's worth checking through, sometimes you can find a great sweater to tuck away til the next cold season swings around.

...Look for great fabrics. Just run your hand along and feel for sheer-y or silky fabrics. A great fabric can make an otherwise dull dud look fabulous!

...Fun prints! Scan the packed racks for fun prints and appealing colors! This is how I find most of my pieces! If something sticks out to you on the rack, check it!

...Don't be scared of sizes. Today, for example, I stopped in a local thrift store where I sell my no longer needed clothes, and decided to take a quick look around. While I was walking to the back of the store, I passed the maternity section, and a gorgeous silky tank caught my attention. While it was a maternity top, it didn't even look it once I got it on. It just looked like a flowy, summery top. So don't be afraid to peruse other sections that you normally wouldn't think you would fit into!

...Always check the ends. Just like retail stores put their best items on the endcaps to get your attention, most thrift shops will do the same. Like today, while I was at the above mentioned thrift shop, I found the most perfect white blazer! I have been wanting one ever since I interviewed for my job on Monday, when they mentioned that they wear a lot of blazers and suits. Instantly I pictured a white blazer with a great printed, silky top underneath with some black pants. It just seems so clean cut and classic! Well, on the end of a rack, under some denim jackets today, I found the most beautiful white blazer! Always check those ends!

...Don't be brand specific. I know a lot of people who say that they only wear jeans from a certain store or designer. Don't be picky! Try on all kinds of designers, styles, fits, etc. You'd be surprised at what you find and what you end up liking! I have things in my closet that I found at Goodwill with tags on them everywhere from WalMart to higher end labels.

...Check out the "ritzy" shops. The Goodwill I frequent is in the ritzier side of town, so there are alot of "too rich to know better" women who send off their designer duds to Goodwill, where I pick them up for $3 or less! But I'm not afraid to check other ends of town either! There is also an ethnic side of town that has a Salvation Army that I'm just dying to check out! I've heard that the clothes dropped off there are from the ethnic people, and the clothes are really uniquely so!

These are just a few of my tips for shopping thrift. I'm pretty excited to check out more stores this week, and I of course will show off all my finds to all of you! To check out even more money saving ideas, check out Frugal Friday over at Life as Mom.

Have a blessed evening!

First Trip to a New Walgreens!

When we moved back to our hometown area last week, I was super nervous about the Walgreens shopping situation. The WAGS where we had been living was in a small town and I was seriously the only couponer to walk through their door. It was nice that (most) all of the cashiers were super nice to me (there's always one in every bunch though, isn't there?) and the shelves always had what I was in search of.

I have never had good luck in any of the Walgreens in bigger towns that I have visited. It seems that at least one, if not more, of the items on my (very) detailed list was always out. So I was nervous about the shopping situation once we moved back, afraid that the shelves would always be wiped clean and that the cashiers would be a lot ruder (is that the correct grammar? ruder? is that even a word?!?!?!?) since there are a lot more couponers in the big city (however, there are also 5 WAGS, but I don't want to waste my time driving from store to store trying to find what I need and nice cashiers).

However, I lucked out! I had hubs stop real quick like this past Sunday when we were out and about on our Goodwill extravaganza. We didn't plan one to stop at, we just stopped at the one I spotted while we were on our way elsewhere. Everything I wanted was in stock...and the cashier was super great! When the RR's printed off, he held them out and made sure that all the correct amounts printed and that all of the RR's printed in the first place! I've NEVER had that happen before! My fears were instantly eased!

Here's my haul...

Total OOP before coupons & RR - $43.48
Total OOP after coupons - $5.86
Total Savings - $37.62 (87%)

The Wagon Arrangement....

Yesterday I talked about using what you have to decorate, or waiting for all the right pieces. I got a lot of requests to see the wagon set up that I had mentioned. So here it is! I didn't buy a single piece for this arrangement, it was all things that we had! The black cloth in the wagon is a curtain that I don't need, and the patterned black and white cloths on the floor are scarves!

I was really excited about this set up! I hope you all like it just as well! Let me know what you think! Keep your eyes peeled next week for another area in my house that I decorated frugally!

I GOT THE JOB!!!!

On Monday I interviewed at a bank for a position of Financial Services Consultant. I was so excited after the interview as it is a really great position that would be an excellent way to get my foot in the door of the financial world!

I got the call this morning that I GOT THE JOB!!! I'm so excited that in this economy I was able to find a position in my area of interest, with a pay that is workable! I start June 1st and I just can't wait!!

So what am I going to do with my week and a half of free time before I start? Prepare. This job is 45 minutes away, and the hours are 8-6. Meaning I won't get home until close to 7:00. So I'm going to spend the next few days doing a lot like...

....making up some freezer meals
....cooking beans & freezing them so I can pull them out to throw in dishes
....research a lot of great crockpot recipes so I can toss in and go before work
....making up some more pantry staples to have on hand in the freezer such as jam, mashed potatoes etc.
....go to Goodwill for some great work outfits!
....write up some posts to have on hand for those crazy nights when I just don't have time to crank out something good for you all!
....completely finish unpacking all of the boxes

As of right now this blog isn't going anywhere. The posting might slow back down, but I still plan to post quality topics and articles pretty regularly. Anyways, I'm off to finish unpacking and do some cleaning. Have a blessed afternoon!

Take a Look Around...

Now that we're all settled in our new house, I've taken to devoting my time to making it feel home-y and that it is decorated as such. However, we moved from a 400 sq. ft. apartment (yes. 400 square feet) into a 3 bedroom house with a basement, main level, and top floor. So it's pretty fair to say that we have less stuff than we have space (but I am surprised in how well our existing items filled most of the space! I guess I was better at compact organizing than I thought!)

It's so easy to see an empty spot and think "Oh! I need to run to Target or Kohl's and get {fill in item here}! Do you even know how costly that would be?!?!? I can't say that I've been completely innocent of not doing that however, I have gotten quite a few new items for the home that probably could have waited. But hey, we're not all without flaws, right?

What I'm trying to remember now, is this...

"Don't think you have to fill your home right away with stuff. Just let it go sparse a little bit until you find just the right pieces. It's those just right pieces that you find at garage sales, Goodwill, from a friend, or even at a big box store, that will make your home yours"

I was given this piece of advice from a good friend while we were still living up at college. She is so right on! And it's thinking of her and how cutesy her house is from waiting for all the right pieces that has kept me from running out shopping everyday because I need something to fill that empty hole on the wall. Not only has following this advice saved me much money, but it has helped me to think creatively with what I have.

For example, hubs re-did one of those Radio Flyer wagons when he was younger. It's tan with red writing and black accents. We have a really random ledge like space along our stairwell, so I placed an unused curtain in the wagon with a styrofoam block under it for varying height. On top I placed a picture frame, one of those doilies with our last name (a wedding gift) and a cut out H for our last name. It turned out quite cute if I do say so myself, and it cost me nothing. It was using items that I already had.

So take a look around your house. How can you re-function your stuff into treasures of beauty to give your home some character? For more great tips, check out Works for Me Wednesday over at We are THAT Family.

Let's Shop Thrift!

Remember my goal of taking $50 and seeing what kind of a wardrobe I can get out of it? Yeah, I love that game! Hubs and I went shopping over the weekend, mostly because he needed to buy black pants for his uniform at his new job. As any frugal person would, I decided to start out at Goodwill and work our way up from cheap to "expensive" thrift shops...and then onto places like TJMaxx and Old Navy if we didn't find anything at the thrift shops.

Well, wouldn't you know it but hubs is the MOST PICKY person I know, so lo and behold he found nothing at the thrift shops. Buy boy oh boy I sure did! (and in case you're wondering, he finally ended up finding the pants at Old Navy, which only set us back $20. I'll take it...)

Anyways. I found all of my haul at Goodwill....and I will be going back to this store regularly. Especially when I don't have hubs tagging along behind me wanting to leave! This store is in the nice part of town, so while (I felt) the prices were a bit higher than other Goodwills in the area, it was soooooo worth it! To start...

LOOOOVE ITTTT! It's a silk tunic, and there is a drawstring in the back so I can make it as form fitting or loose as I want. I LOVE IT! I'm picturing it with white capri's for the summer....or dark wash jeans and a cute little white bolero for the colder months! AH! I'm just so excited about it! It only cost $3.38 and it will work great for year round outfits!

Well, maybe this should be my favorite purchase of the day though....a Gap 3/4 sleeve Blazer. It's love at first try-on! I interviewed for a job today at a bank (which is actually the reason I purchaed this, but didn't end up wearing it...) and they told me that they often "suit up". It doesn't have to be a full on suit, just a blazer and dress pants. So this will come in handy if I end up getting the job. And at only $3.38, even if I don't get the job it will come in handy!

I have begun lovingly referring to this as my retro skirt. I love it! I was taking one last glance through the clothes section on my way to the register after the fitting room and I saw this beauty hanging there. After a quick size check, I determined that it is in my usual size range so I grabbed it. At the register I noticed that it was tagged in pink, which this weekend meant half off so this baby only cost me $1.69. STEAL!!

Speaking of pink tagged items, here is another! This cute little chiffon top is going to look great layered over a green, brown or teal cami. I'm so excited to try it out with white capri's or dress pants...or a cute denim skirt! And at only $1.69 I won't feel so bad about hiding it away during the chilly winter months!

And last but not least, this crazy fun, super bright skirt. I love skirts. I especially love girly, a-line, flowy skirts. They just make me feel super cute. And I just couldn't resist these bright colors and the paisley print! I'm excited to pair this with a green tee or cardigan...even a green sweater for those fall months (who says you can't go a little bright during fall, especially when it only cost $3.38 to begin with?)

So until my next Goodwill extravaganza, I wish you luck with your thrift shopping! And to see more great deals and steals from thrift stores and the like, check out the Frugal Fashionista Fashion Show going on over at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam!

I'm Baaaaaaaaaccccccckkkkk!!!!!!!!

Hello All!

Well, we are finally moved into our new home, and let me tell ya, it feels great! A lot of the unpacking is done, just a few boxes and some things to hang on the wall left. Otherwise, we are just living the life!

And things are still continuing to fall into place incredibly well! I have a job interview on Monday morning at a bank, which is something that I would LOVE! Plus, the bank is close to my best friends college so we are going to be able to car pool (which would be fabulous as it is a 45 minute drive...), hubs starts his work on Monday (and while the wage still isn't exactly what we need after much negotiating with the company, it's workable so we'll settle for now...), we got a FREE big screen TV from a friend of the family who is getting a new one, and we get to see family on a regular basis now! God is good!

I didn't do any shopping this week (except for house stuff, which I personally love, but I won't bore you!) so I don't have any super savings to show. So with that, I'm off to a bridal shower later this afternoon and maybe some garage sales this morning (there are several in town today, and even one next door!). I'll be back tomorrow with the week in review, and I'm hoping to be back to regular posting thereafter!

Have a blessed day!

A Whole Lot of Randomness....

First off, I would like to thank you all for your wonderful words of encouragement via email and the comments in regards to getting ready to move and my "stress leave" from this blog over the weekend. You are all so encouraging, and it is so nice to come back to wonderful words of encouragement from all of you!

Now. You all need to head over to Super Coupon Girl. She is currently on a vacation in England, and I was lucky enough to get to write a guest post for her! I chose to write about how coupons have affected more than just grocery shopping in my life. Check it out, be inspired, and let me know if you all feel the same way too!

I know this was a short and rather un-fun post...but I'm off to finish packing, start the final deep clean to our apartment so we can keep our deposit, and to make a quick WAGS run so I can use up some expiring RR's. Have a wonderful evening...and I hope to get a post with some substance out tomorrow...but I make no promises as my moving day has changed to a day earlier due to someone needing to be at the house for the gas company to hook things up. *bah!!* so things are getting a little crazier than before now!!

Have a blessed evening!

An Unscheduled Break...

Hi all. I'm taking the next few days off from blogging. We are heading back to our hometown one last time before the big move next week. I plan to spend the weekend painting, cleaning and doing yardwork at our new house so it's all done when we do move in. In addition to that, we have a few family events going on, so it's going to be a pretty busy few days.

I wanted to have some posts pre written and scheduled to post on their own, but my stress level has been astronomical, and I just haven't gotten around to it with all that I've had going on this week, between finals, working 40 hours and trying to get everything packed I've just been strung out thin.

So I'm disappearing from cyberspace until Monday. Keep in mind though, that next week is moving week, and I will also be working 30 hours to add to the crazy-ness. So I will probably be around sparodically, but not nearly as often as usual. Don't worry though, once we get moved in and things settled, I will be back full time!

Have a blessed weekend!

More Budget Remodel Ideas...

Lately, the focus on my mind (after finals...which I took my last of this morning. I'm a college grad y'all!) has been remodeling our budget. We keep going over budget! I've had a lot of frustration in trying to figure out how to lower costs and etc. over the past weeks and here is some of the progress and decisions that have been made...and I just wanted to share with you said progress...

...I've decided to have a "no spend" week once per month. This week will mean no spending. Period. With the exception of gas as odds are hubs and I will both be commuting to our work. This week will be no grocery shopping (not even for milk. If we run out, we run out), no CVS/WAGS, no eating out. Nothing. I don't know how this will work out as I've never done anything like this before, but I'm eager to give it a try!

...Write down every last penny that we spend the other three weeks of the month. I know, I know. What kind of frugal, budget minded person doesn't do this? Me. I just didn't think it was necessary as I was using the cash system. But since we've been going over budget A LOT, I'm thinking I was wrong and need to start doing this.

...Create an "Eat Me" section in the refrigerator. The dedicated wife who created this section just to save some money is now a legendary icon. But she was so. right. on. I'm going to create this upon moving into our new house because it will help us to stay on track with lowering our food waste. Which in the end will lower our grocery costs. And along the same page as this goal, I'm going to have more leftover nights. I seem to be on the mindset that if we're home together at night (meaning hubs and I) then I need to make something new. And I only schedule leftovers for one night a week. That just isn't enough to get it all eaten!

...I've already purchased a yogurt maker to make my own yogurt. And I have lots of yummy recipes in my box for homemade granola...so now its time to find a bread machine. This will help enable me to be able to make my own pizza crusts, rolls, etc. instead of buying a mix. Granted, a pizza crust mix goes for about 33-50c around here, depending on the sales, but I think I might be able to make it for cheaper.

As I think of more ways to cut our costs, I'll share. I realize this isn't the most informative post for all of you. It's just me turning my wheels and thinking aloud. Thanks for listening...errr...reading :)

This Weeks Savings...and Garage Sale Finds!

I hit WalMart twice last week...WAGS once...the most AMAZING Kelloggs deal...and more garage sales! First, the garage sale finds...

If any of you have been following Jen over at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam during her Frugal Fashionista series, you'll understand where the excitement over the above items is coming from. I got the sweater for $1 and the tank for 25c. I have decided to stem off of these purchases and make a goal for myself. I am going to allow myself $50 for clothing budget, which has to last me...3 months. *dun, dun, dun* I am eager to see what kinds of cute things I can find on the cheap at garage sales, Goodwill, thrift shops and rummage sales. At the end of three months, we'll see if it's possible to craft an entire seasons wardrobe on $50. I'll keep you updated with each purchase...a post will be devoted to this purchase soon.

Kitchen Scale - $1. yay...I have been looking for one of these!

The rest of my finds. Fall basket - 25c, various kitchen utensils - 25c each, decorative balls - 50c each, beginnings of a wreath for our new front door (the yellow stuff) - $3. Exciting!
